ADAMS, Herbert  (1858-1945) sculptor, medalist.
            Full name: Herbert Samuel Adams.
Born West Concord, Vermont, 28 January 1858.

One of top American sculptors, Adams rose in his profession
to a position of eminence by 1892, when he joined with other
sculptors to found the National Sculpture Society, of which
he became the 4th president (1908-10) and named Honorary
Fellow of the Society 9 May 1933.

He prepared four busts for New York University's Hall of
Fame; also bronze doors for Saint Bartholomew's Church
(New York City) and Library of Congress (started by Olin
Levi Warner, q.v., finished by Adams).

He was a director of the American Academy of Arts and
Letters, a trustee of both the Hispanic Society of America
and the American Academy in Rome, all associated with art
and sculpture; sculptor member U.S. Fine Arts Commission.

Frequently he would have his bas-reliefs issued in several
sizes, also issue his reliefs for medals as galvanos in original
size of his model. This, perhaps, influenced the Medallic Art
Company – which made most of his medals – to do likewise,
particularly for the issues of The Society of Medalists. These
would be positive galvanos and given a patina close to the
one chosen for the medal issue.

His medallic work stretched across five decades, interspersed
among his larger sculptural genre. He signed models HA,
and HA in monogram for his Society of Medalist issue.

The Sculpturing Achievement Award by National Sculpture
Soc is named in his honor (awarded since 1946). He was
recipient of American Academy of Arts and Letters Gold
            Medal for Sculpture, 1926.

Died New York City, 21 May 1945.
