BAUMGARTEN, Herman  (1849-1905) German-American seal engraver, diesinker, Washington, DC.
Born Hanover, Germany, March 1849.

Son of Selig Baumgarten (q.v.), also an engraver, who came to America, to Baltimore, with family 1852. Herman moved to Washington, 1871 establishing a seal engraving and rubber stamp business. His brother Julius joined the firm 1880. Their customers were primarily Government departments, private firms and organizations. Patterson and Dougall quote statement "Every post office in U.S. is furnished with stamps of his make."

Died Washington, DC, 24 May 1905.
