BITTER, Karl (1867-1915) Austrian-American sculptor, medallist, painter.
          Full name: Karl Theodore Francis Bitter.
          Born Rudolfschein, Austria, 6 December 1867.
          He deserted the Austrian army to come to America and
          New York City arriving 22 November 1889.
          Active as director of sculpture at three expositions:
          Buffalo (1901), Saint Louis (1904), San Francisco
          (1915); he participated in Chicago (1893), Paris (1900).
          Medals he received at Columbian (1893), Paris Universelle
          Internationale (1900), South Carolina Interstate (1902),
          and Panama-Pacific (1915) plus an Architectural League
          Medal are in with his papers at the Archives of American
          Art, Smithsonian Institution.
          Fellow: National Sculpture Society.
          Died New York City, 10 April 1915.
