BROWN, William Garl Junior  (1823-1894) British-American portrait painter, designer, Richmond, Virginia.
Born England, October 1823. Came to America 1837 with
family, father of same name (Sr.) was landscape painter.
Established studio for portrait painting in Richmond
in 1846. His portrait paintings now held by museums and
state buildings in Virginia and North Carolina.

In 1847 Brown traveled to battlefields of Mexican War. He
painted a portrait of General Taylor so lifelike it was chosen
by War Secretary William L. Marcy as the portrait for Mint

medal. Brown demanded payment of $200, or the dies for
striking more medals. Amazingly, the Mint agreed to supply
the dies. But he demanded the obverse die in a smaller, 41mm
size, and had a new reverse die cut giving details of his copyright.
These were issued for the election campaign of 1848. (It was
forbidden for campaign medals to be engraved at the Mint, so
these may have been struck elsewhere.)

Died on a trip to visit sister, Buffalo, New York, 1894.
