CALVERLEY, Charles  (1833-1914) sculptor, medalist.
          Name frequently misspelled: Calverly or Caverley.
          Born Albany, New York, 1 November 1833.
          Metropolitan Museum of Art has two biographical
          letters (reported in C8 {1965} Gardner) where artist
          states the number of reliefs (40) he did, of 250 sculptures
          total). His statue of Lafayette S. Foster is in U.S. Capitol.
          Exhibited Philadelphia Expo, 1876.
          Elected to National Academy in 1874.
          Died Essex Falls, New Jersey, 25 February 1914.
          Calverley's Lincoln portrait (issued in several original
          varieties of collector interest) proved popular for reissuing
          and one of the few bas-reliefs issued cast, galvano and
          diestruck (as both a shell and solid medal). His 1895 James
          Russell Lowell Plaque issued by Grolier Club popular in
          American museum collections.
