CHILDS, Shubael D.  (b 1799, fl 1821-1860) engraver, Boston (1821-26), New York City (1831-37), Chicago (1837-
60); founder Childs and Company, Chicago, 1837. Taught engraving to his younger brother, Benjamin F. Childs,
Henry Kinnersley (and perhaps others) who remained in New York, while he moved to Chicago, establishing an
engraving, seal-cutting and diesinking business (their claim in 1861: largest west of NYC). His son, Shubael D. Jr.,

The firm survived the Chicago Fire of 1870 and was a major supplier of diestruck items for the Columbian
Exposition (1892-3). It continued business w2ell into the 20th century but turned more toward advertising
          specialties.
