COLEY, Colonel William  (active 1786) Colonial American diesinker, goldsmith.
           A goldsmith of New York City, he was hired by Reuben Harmon Jr (who 
           obtained the grant to coin Vermont coins) to prepare the dies. Breen states 
           Coley was disappointed with the receipts for the Vermont coinage and joined 
           his New York silversmith partner, Daniel Van Voorhis, in an attempt to obtain 
           contract for New York coinage. Coley's dies were replaced by those of James F. 
           Atlee (q.v.), both for the Vermont coinage and the coins of Machin's Mills for 
           proposed New York issues.
