COX, Albion  (ca 1760-1795) Colonial American minter, modeller; first assayer U.S. Mint, 1794.
Born England ca1760. Came to America, 1st, prior 1786.

With other English émigrés, Thomas Goadsby and Walter Mould, formed
colonial mint at Rahway Mills New Jersey, which struck New Jersey coppers,
but plagued by lawsuits. Cox sent to debtors prison, escaped, returned to England.
U.S. Minister to Great Britain, Thomas Pinckney, persuaded Cox to return to America
to become assayer of the Philadelphia Mint. His mint appointment, signed by George
Washington, was dated 4 April 1794 but held office only year and eight months. Silver
coinage there delayed until late 1794 because Cox & chief coiner Henry Voigt could not
post surety bonds for handling gold and silver bullion.

Died at the Philadelphia Mint, 27 November 1795.
