CROSS, Peter F.  (c1820, active 1846-60) Early American engraver; assistant engraver, Philadelphia Mint.
           Born Sheffield, England, circa 1820.

           Worked as engraver for mint in England before coming
           to America 1845; listed as engraver in New York City 
           directories, 1846-48. In 1855 he relocated to Philadelphia,            
           employed by U.S. Mint, as engraving assistant to James B. 
           Longacre (q.v.). Cross engraved obverse naval scene for            
           Ingraham Medal Seth Eastman (q.v.) designed.

           Died Philadelphia, date unknown (Loubat states 1856, Groce 
           and Wallace disagree since Peter Cross is listed in 1860 Census).
