de FRANCISCI, Anthony  (1887-1964) Italian-American sculptor, medalist.
          Last name pronounced: dee-fran-CHEE-she. Nickname: Tony.
          Born Palerno, Italy, 13 June 1887. Came to America 1903.
          Consistant exhibitor at National Academy of Design (1912-1949)
          where only his Winchester Medal was identified (see below),
          otherwise he showed portrait reliefs in 1914, 1915; medals and
          plaques in 1919, 1921 (with Maine Cenennial commemorative
          coin), 1934 and 1949.

          Signed models AF monograms (11 different).
          Academician: National Academy of Design.
          Fellow: National Sculpture Society.
          Awarded: J. Sanford Saltus Medal for Medallic Art by
          American Numismatic Society, 1927.
          Winner 1933 (first time offered) National Sculpture Society
          Lindsey Morris Prize for best bas-relief (including medallic art).
          Winner 1954 Allied Artists Prize bas-relief sculpture.
          Died New York City, 20 October 1964.
          
          Artist’s daughter, Gilda Slate, made two donations of the
          artist’s work to the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the
          first in 1966 and in 1968.
