ECKSTEIN, Johannes II  (c1736-1817) German-American engraver, painter, modeler in wax, sculptor.           In America he used the name: John Eckstein.

Born Mecklenburg, Germany, c1736. Employed at
Prussian court as sculptor and historical painter, 1772-1794.
Traveled to England where he exhibited bas-reliefs, wax
models and paintings in 1761 and 1764.  Came to America
1794. Worked in Philadelphia 1795-1812 as a limner and
statuary with his son, Frederick. Founded Columbian Society
of Artists (1795), Pennsylvania Academy (1805) and Society
of Artists (1810). Breen states Eckstein created "models" of
the Draped Bust design, but his talents did not merit further
work for the U.S. Mint. Created bust of Washington 1906.
Died Havanna, Cuba, 27 June 1817.
