FLANAGAN, John  (1865-1952) sculptor, medalist.
Born Newark, New Jersey, 21 May 1865.
From 1885 to 1890 Flanagan was an assistant to Augustus
Saint-Gauens, working in his New York City studio. He then
traveled to Paris to study with Henri Chapu at the Academia
Julien and with Alexandre Falguiere at Ecole des Beaux-arts.
His earliest medallic work was in 1898 while in Paris. His
1932 U.S. quarter coin design was produced well into the 21st
century. Thus his relief work spanned across three centuries,
yet he is considered somewhat of an obscure artist outside of
          the numismatic field.

Flanagan created an oversize sculpture head of Augustus
Saint-Gaudens, and a similar portrait relief (in 1934) now
in the collection of New York Universiy, the latter issued
as a plaquette by Medallic Art Company (see 1937-015 below).
Flanagan created medals for both the major medal series
in America: the first Circle of Friends of the Medallion
(1909) and The Society of Medalists Issue #6 (1932). He
was one of only two medallists so honored (Paul Manship
          was the other such artist).

He was once considered an alternative sculptor to
create models for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition
commemorative coins (which did not occur) but he did
design and model the official Panama-Pacific Exposition
Medal of 1915, perhaps his most popular medal.
He exhibited frames of medals at both the Art Institute
of Chicago (1905-1916) and National Academy of Design
in New York City (1908-1947). Individual medals were
never identified in the exhibition catalogs for most years.
Flanagan made extensive use of the three major forms of
reproducing medallic art -- cast, galvano, struck – often
selling these himself to individuals and museums. He also
acted somewhat of a sales agent for the sale of other
sculptor's medallic works (e.g. to Newark Museum).

His 1932 George Washington portrait on the U.S. quarter
outlasted designs with greater longevity than all other U.S.
coin denominations, with the exception of Victor Brenner’s
1909 Lincoln on the cent. In the American Bicentennial era
a new reverse was substituted replacing his original design
          for one year (1976) only.

In 1999 began a ten year program of replacing Flanagan’s
quarter reverse again with a design for each of the fifty states
plus American territories. In 2010 the reverse was replaced
by for a third series, of national parks. Thus making Flanagan
the only American coin artist to have his coin portrait used
on three circulating coin series implemented after his death.
He signed models with elaborate JF monograms (at least
10 different kinds), most often with JF in circle. Because of
their similarity Flanagan’s monograms are often confused
with those of James Earle Fraser.

Fellow and  Honorary Fellow: National Sculpture Society.
Awarded: J. Sanford Saltus Medal for Medallic Art by
          American Numismatic Society, 1921.

Died New York City, 28 March 1952.

[Cataloger Note: Another American sculptor, John
Barnard Flannagan (1895-1942) was a generation later;
his preferred media was field stone (never bas-relief),
but he is often confused with John Flanagan the sculptor/
medalist. See article P2 {1995}Smith (Pete) below.]
