GELERT, Johannes Sophus  (1852-1923) Danish-American sculptor, medalist. 
         Name often misspelled Gellert.
         Born Nybel, Schleswig, Denmark, 10 December 1852. 
         Came to America 1887. Worked in Chicago 1887-98, in New
         York City 1898-1923. Prepared sculpture for Chicago 1892-3
         and Saint Louis 1904 World's Fairs.
         He was recommended to create the souvenir medal for the
         Columbian Expo by the Fine Arts Commission according to
         author Don Taxay. (It is unknown if this came about as no
         medal of this Expo can be attributed to Gelert).
         Died New York City, 3 November 1923.
         Member: National Sculpture Society.
