HARTMANN, Herman  (active 1850-59) partner engraving, diesinking firm, New York City.
Hartmann was the partner with Frederick B. Smith of Smith
and Hartmann (1850-59). It is suspected Hartmann was not
an engraver but more the businessman. Smith was perhaps
the sole engraver (though poorly educated). [Smith had been
associated with three active engravers previously, Richard
Trested, Charles Cushing Wright, and James Bale. Smith
later joins with Gustav Horst to form Smith & Horst, which
struck some of the dies signed Smith and Hartmann – each
of these names have entries in this work.]
There is no record of Hartmann after 1859. (Was he
in the Civil War? Did he die or disappear? ... are
questions to be answered by future research.)
