HEMPHILL, Phebe  (1960- ) sculptor.
           Born West Chester, Pennsylvania, 25 April 1960.

           Education: Graduate of Pennsylvania Academy of
           Fine Arts (four years study sculpture, drawing).
           1983-1987; received Certificate of Fine Arts:
           Studied with Evangelos Frudakis (Frudalis Academy
           of Art) 1983, 1986-1989; summer workshop with
           Eugene Daub, study for low relief, 1999.

           Inspired to study relief ssculpture from her grandfather.
           Gibbons Gray Cornwall Jr, a businssman who took up
           relief sculpture late in live; he in turn was inspired by
           his aunt, Matha Jacckson Cornwell, sculptor and
           one-time assistant to Augustus Saint-Gaudents.
            
           Staff sculptor Franklin Mint 1987-2002, first for
           porcelin objects, then in medallic department.
           Staff sculptor McFarlane Toys 2002-2005.
            Appointed staff sculptor U.S. Mint May 2006.                    
            
           Works in tight academic style. Most notable work:
           two Congressional Gold Medals. Signs work: PH.

           Member: American Medallic Sculpture Association.
           Awarded Renaissance Sculpture Award Franklin Mint 2001;
           National Sculpture Society Alex Ettel Grant, 2001; NSS
           competitions for life sculpture, 2nd place 1993, 3rd 1995.
