HERING, Henry  (1874-1949) sculptor, medalist.
          Nickname Hy Hering.
Born New York City, 15 February 1874.
Did extensive work for Augustus St-Gaudens and was
responsible (with St-Gaudens) of influencing Theodore
Roosevelt ordering Philadelphia Mint to obtain a Janvier
die-engraving pantograph. The mint engravers, notably
Charles Barber resisted reducing St-Gaudens models for
coins. Hering took these to Henri and Felix Weil at Medallic
Art Company in New York City to effect the reductions.

Exhibited a frame of medals Chicago Art Institute (1916)
He worked as assistant to St-Gaudens, prepared a bronze
bust of the famed sculptor, and often spoke on his relationship
with St-Gaudens, e.g. he gave a speech at the New York
Numismatic Club 14 December 1934 “St-Gaudens and the
          $10 and $20 Gold Coins.”
Signed models with superimposed HH monogram.
          Honorary Fellow: National Sculpture Society.
Died New York City, 15 January 1949.

National Sculpture Society established an award for
collaboration between architect and sculpture and named
this award in honor of Henry Hering. The medal was
created by Albino Manca (q.v.) in 1958.
