HIGLEY, Samuel  (ca 1687-1737) Colonial American diesinker, issuer, schoolmaster, surgeon, metallurgist.
          Born near Tariffville, Connecticut, ca 1687.
          With Yale degree he became schoolmaster, then surgeon
          and prospered. Purchased land track near copper mine
          outside Simsbury, Connecticut. Established mint in nearby
          Grandby, issued coins there in copper from mine, which
          was later known as Higley Mine.
          His brother, John Higley (see producers) continued the
          issuance of Higley's Coppers after Samuel's death.
          Died at sea enroute to England, May 1737.
