JOSEPHU, Joseph  (1889-1970) Austrian-American sculptor, medalist.
           First name also JOSEF. Original family name spelled JOSEPHI
           (in France but changed to JOSEPHU in Austria in 17th century).

           Born Gratz, Austria, 12 February 1889.
           Carved wood and molded objects as early as age 10. At18
           attended Vienna Academy of Fine Arts Sculpture School.
           Wounded in World War I, after which continued art studies. 

           Most noted for his 1935 statue Saint Florian, patron saint of
           firefighters, located at Vienna firehouse on Am Hof Square.
           Came to America and Englewood, New Jersey, 1939. His first
           American work was Refugees, now in Staten Island Museum.

           Died New Hyde Park, New York, 13 September 1970.
           Fellow: National Sculpture Society.
