JOVINE, Marcel  (1921-2003) medalist, sculptor, anamalier.
Born Naples, Italy, 26 July 1921. Came to America
first as a prisoner of war, interned in Pennsylvania,
repatriated to Italy 1946, returned in 1950, naturalized
as U.S. citizen 195? Settled in Closter, New Jersey.

Sculptor, designer (and often inventor) toys, games, dolls.
Created Playbook Series of plastic figures he modeled and
illustrated, 1951, including Three Little Pigs, Little Red
Riding Hood, Jack & the Beanstalk, Hansel & Gretel,
Three Bears, Cinderella. Most noted, however, as creator
          of Visible Man and Visible Woman for Renewal, 1960;
also Blessed Event doll, Visible Model T, many others.

First medallic item created in 1964 for hometown Closter,
became noted more for medals in series, as his Calendar
medal series for Medallic Art Co–among 14 other series.

The United States Mint treated Jovine in progressively
shabby manor. His first coin models (1987) were accepted
intact for both sides (and won a CODY award, historical
significant; see below). The following year only his reverse
was accepted to allow Elizabeth Jones to do the obverse.
In 1990 his reverse only was accepted but was altered by
a staff engraver. In 1992 an Olympic reverse was accepted,
but in 1995 an Olympic reverse model was completely
remodeled by William Cousins. He decided to try again,
in 2001, but his design was merged with one of another
artist, Alex Shagin. This was the final indignity, and he
refused any further work for the Mint. For an artist who
was an exception designer of rare talent that submitted
professional models, this was a loss to the nation’s coins.

Sculpted bronze Horse of The Year, Affirmed, 1979; John
Henry, 1982; Conquistador Cielo 1983, for Thoroughbred
Racing Association. Modeled seven Olympic sculptures
1984 (cast in polyester by Barrett-Colea) for issuing with
commemorative Olympic telephones by AT&T. This in
addition to Olympic theme coins and medals listed below..

His 1987 Constitution Bicentennial Commemorative Five
Dollar gold won a COTY, Coin Of  The Year award (from
Krause Publications) for Most Historical Significant coin.

He was a. speaker at New York Numismatic Club 12 May 1989
on “Trial and Tribulations: Coins, Designs and the U.S. Mint.”

Fellow: National Sculpture Society; winner Society’s
Lindsey Morris Prize for best bas-relief (including
medallic art), 1977; elected President two terms 1988-
1991; named Honorary Fellow of the Society, 1992.

          Fellow: American Numismatic Society, awarded:
          J. Sanford Saltus Medal for Medallic Art, 1984.

          Member: American Medallic Sculpture Association.
          Awarded American Numismatic Association’s
Award for Excellence in Medallic Sculpture (formerly
called Medallist of the Year), 1987, the 19th such
          recipient of this award.

Member (Confrere): Order of Saints Maurice and
          Lazarus; appointed Officer (Ufficiale) 1992.

Died Greenwich, Connecticut, 20 January 2003.
Jovine was the subject of a 2008 symposium in his honor
conducted by Donald Martin Reynolds, who was  the author
of the book on the centennial history of the National
          Sculpture Society, A32 {1993} published during Jovine’s
tenure as president. The speakers at the symposium included
these who spoke on the artist and his medallic work, including
Donald Scarinci, D. Wayne Johnson, Alan Stahl, George
          Cuhaj, Hugo Greco.
