KLINE, John W.  (active 1857-76) medalist, Philadelphia.
The American Numismatic Society has in their archives a 4-page
flyer from this artist (ca 1871), which calls himself a medalist,
a manufacturer of medals, tokens and cards; an importer and
dealer in cards and medals (his 1876 storecards adds "shells,
minerals, engravings and curiosities"). But most importantly
the flyer states that he purchases dies. The sixty medals listed
are by American diesinkers (eighteen of which were by John A.
Bolen) without identity of the artists which created them and
offers to strike these in any of five compositions. (Thus any medal
attributed to Kline is suspect and must be checked to ascertain that
it was not created by someone else.) Kline may have engraved the
dies for Lingg & Brother's American Centennial medalets but here
again these may have been engraved by someone else.
The advertisment of John W. Kline as dealer in coins, medals
and postage stamps is reproduced in S61 {2002} Musante, p 196.
