LAUTH, Julius  (1913-1991) medalist; art director, vice president, Medallic Art Company.
            Born Brooklyn, New York, 11 April 1913.

            Trained as an architect, went to work for Medallic Art
            1931 as errand boy, rose to director (1956) and owner
            (1960); his entire working career (except for military
            service, World War II) was with this firm. Was diecutter
            under company founders, Henri and Felix Weil. He knew
            every production process, later directed all production
            and sculpture operations 1960 to his retirement 1973.
            As art director (1956-73) he issued commissions, dealt
            with sculptors, issued production orders. Edited all
            models and dies, and, when necessary, prepared models
            for medals, including those listed below. Chairman
            Medal Committee, American Numismatic Society,
            (1960-80). Medallic mentor to D. Wayne Johnson
             (present author).
            Patron National Sculpture Society.
            
          Lauth was a member of the jury (1974) of the National
            Bicentennial Competition which chose the three coin
            designs for the reverses of the U.S. quarter, half and
            dollar coins (won by Jack L. Ahr, Seth G. Huntington,
            and Dennis R. Williams, qq.v.). Other jury members
            were: Adlai S. Hardin, Gilroy Roberts, Robert Weinman,
            all sculptors, and Elvira Clain-Stefanelli, Smithsonian
            Institution numismatic curator.

            Died Annapolis, Maryland, 23 April 1991.
