LEONARD, Allen  (1810ca-1871) Early American engraver,
           diesinker, New York (1835-1836), Philadelphia (1844-70).
           Father, Frederick Leonard, a buttonmaker in Philadlephia
           (1842-43). With the death of Christian Gobrecht in 1844
           a vacancy was created at the Philadelphia Mint; Leonard
           was an unsuccessful candidate for the engraver position,
           which went to James B. Longacre. Leonard in business
           with Peter Leonard (1845-47); listed in city directories as
           diesinker, later as silver chaser and silversmith (1850-70).
           Signed some dies: LEONARD.
           Died Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 7 July 1871.
