LEUTZE, Emanuel  (1816-1868) German-American painter, designer.
            Full name: Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze (pronounced LOIT suh).
            Born Gmünd, Württemberg, Germany, 24 May 1816.
            Came to America as a child, but traveled back to
            Europe, where he painted portraits and scenes, 1841-59
            and became member of Dusseldorf School.
            Painted mural in U.S. Capitol, and Washington Crossing
             the Delaware nd others. Salathiel Ellis was assigned Leutze
            design of country's first Lifesaving medal, followed by the
            1865 Vanderbilt Medal, Ellis modeled both for striking at
            Philadlphia Mint.

            Leutze  painted his self-portrait 1843.
            Died Washington, DC, 18 July 1868.
