LOVETT, Robert  (1796-1874) Early American diesinker, engraver,
          Philadelphia (1816-24), New York City 1824- 1874).
Born New York City, 1796 (or ?1797 according to Groce).
Robert Senior was founder of the Lovett dynasty of engravers
in America much like the Wyon family in England. (He
never used the name Senior, but numismatic writers have to
differentiate him from the two other family members of the
same name.) The eldest Robert was the father of Robert Junior,
George Hampden, Thomas and John D., grandfather of Robert
            K. -- all engravers -- covering a span of nearly eighty years
(1816-1894) dominating private medal and token engraving
in New York City and Philadelphia.

Robert was active politically, especially in the American Institute,
an organization promoting domestic industry. He rose to a vice
presidentcy. resulting in his assurance of issuing their award
medals (which existed for over 100 years ,mostly of his family’s
          manufacture).

Robert Senior cut some of the early dies for Scovill. He signed
some dies RL; he also signed R.LOVETT NY on Hard Times
          tokens, Masonic and temperance medals.

Died Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 31 December 1874.
(His wife Anna died the day before; she was 80, he 79.)
