MANSHIP, Paul  (1885-1966) sculptor, medalist.
         Full name: Paul Howard Manship.

Born Saint Paul, Minnesota, 25 December 1885.
Manship created medals for both the major medal series
in America: Circle of Friends of the Medallion (1914)
and Society of Medalists (1930). He was one of only
two so honored (John Flanagan was the other artist).

Manship’s medallic productions spanned six decades,
creating medals during his entire sculptural career. His
work is recorded in twelve categories, lised below –
more than any other American artist as an example of
         his wide creative versatility.

His medallic work is dominated by bold portraits
and highly significant symbolism, choosing  some of
America’s most prominent American subjects and subject
themes. Thus his medals are sought by museums, also
widely collected by both numismatists and art collectors.

In three instances Manship was asked to design coins
but lost out in every case. US Mint asked Manship to
design Panama-Pacific commem half dollar (but chief
engraver Charles Barber overruled this and did the final
coin). He was mentioned as possible artist for Hudson
NY Sesqui commem half dollar (final version by Chester
Beach). Among nine artists in six countries invited to
prepare coin patterns in competition for Ireland coinage,
first struck in 1929, but he lost to Percy Metcalfe of
England; whereupon he donated a set of his Irish coin
patterns to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1929), and
later a second set to the Smithsoian Art Museum (1965).

In 1917 he exhibited a group of his medals (by blockprint)
at the Art Institute of Chicago AE2 (1917) no. 235.
Member United States Commission of Fine Arts 1937-1941.
         Fellow: National Sculpture Society.
Awarded: J. Sanford Saltus Medal for Medallic Art by
American Numismatic Society, 1925. Recipient of American
Academy of Arts and Letters Gold Medal for Sculpture, 1945.
Winner 1953 National Sculpture Society Lindsey Morris
Prize for best bas-relief (including medallic art).

         Signed models PM initials.

Died New York City, 31 January 1966.
