NEBEL, Berthold  (1889-1964) Swiss-American sculptor, medalist.
          Born Basel, Switzerland, 19 April 1889.
          Came to America as an infant.

          Studied under James Earle Fraser. Won a Prix de Rome
          and studied in Rome until 1920 (marring an Italian) then
          returned to America, appointed director of school of
          sculpture at Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh.

          From 1928 to 1938 he prepared bronze relief doors for
          three institutions at Audubon Terrace in New York City,
          Museum of the American Indian, American Geographical
          Society and Hispanic Society of America.

          His statue of General Joe Wheeler in U.S. Capitol.
          Won honorable mention in Medallic Art Company
          50th Anniv Medal contest,1949, over 150 entries to
          celebrate opening of new building in New York City.
          He received an Honorable Mention in Medallic Art
          Company’s 50th Anniversary 1950 Medallic Sculpture
          Competition (among 150 enries).

          Signed models BN monogram in circle or initials.
          Fellow: National Sculpture Society.
          Died Westport, Connecticut, 3 April 1964.
