NOBLE, Joseph Veach  (1920-2007) museum official, designer; arts administrator.
            Born Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 3 April 1920.

            Art Director, Society of Medalists (1975-79).

            Trustee and officer: Brookgreen Gardens, president
            (1976-90), chairman (1990-2007).
            Officer: American Association of Museums, president
            (1975-78); recipient Distinguished Service Award (1991).
            Administrator: Metropolitan Museum of Art (1956-70).
            Director: Museum of City of New York (1970-85).
            Life Member: National Sculpture Society; Medal of
            Honor recipient (1982), longtime trustee, board member.
            Member, Advistor to the Board: American Medallic
            Sculpture Association.

            He collected ancient Greek coins, vases and similar antiquities;
            his collection was purchased intact by the Tampa Museum of
            Art, of which he was instrumental in that it received the estate
            of sculptor Carl Paul Jennewein (q.v.), a close friend. He
            wrote a book, The Techniques of Painted Attic Pottery, plus
            articles in addition to speeches on these and medallic subjects.

            Died Maplewood, New Jersey, 22 September 2007.
