PRATT, Bela Lyon  (1867-1917) sculptor, medalist.
          First name pronounced BEE-la.
          Born Norwich, Connecticut, 11 December 1867.
         
          Studied art at Yale University, where, in 2009 a reorganized
          Numismatic Department in the Yale University Art Museum
          was named in his honor, and memorialized with the portrait
          plaque by Richard Henry Recchia (see Portrait, below).

          Augustus St-Gaudens commissioned Pratt to prepare
          two colossal groups for Chicago Columbian Expo 1892.
          In 1893 he was appointed sculpture professor at Boston
          Museum of Fine Arts, a position he held until his death.

          His most famous work was coin models for U.S. half
          eagle and quarter eagle (in distinctive incuse relief) 1908.
          Pratt was one of dozen artists considered for creating
          commemorative coins for the Panama-Pacific Exposition.

          Singed models B.L.P. initials, both horizontal or stacked
          vertically.
          Fellow: National Sculpture Society.
          Founding member: Guild of Boston Artists (1914).
          Died Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, 18 May 1917.
