ANTROBUS, John (c1837-1907) British-American painter, portraitist, designer.
Born Warwickshire, England, circa 1837.
Came to America before he was 18 (1855) to Montgomery,
Alabama where he advertised as a portrait painter. He moved
to New Orleans prior to the Civil War, was commissioned as
a Confederate lieutenant and saw action in Virginia. Following
the war he married in New Orleans, moved often (Chicago,
Washington DC, Detroit). Noted as a poet, journalist and
painter (portrait, landscape, genre) his painting of Ulysses
Grant (probably IAP 70980024) was copied for the Grant
Congressional Medal while he lived in Chicago. He finally
settled in Detroit where he lived for 32 years and often a
contributor to Detroit newspapers.
Died Detroit, Michigan, 18 October 1907.
