BALE, James (active 1824-51) Early American engraver, diesinker.
Learned engraving from Charles Cushing Wright (q.v.), beginning 1824, later joined with him as Wright & Bale (1829-33). This active partnership produced the die for their most noted medal, the Boston School Medal (issued 1831-44), and the numerous Hard Times token dies in the brief period 1832-33. Bale was also active producing storecards for the period 1830-49.
The breakup of the Wright & Bale partnership may have been acrimonious; one variety of a medal (Baker 511) shows where Bale's name was tooled off, and Wright's name remains intact. After the separation each engraver formed a new partnership, Bale as Bale & Smith (1835-47) with Frederick B. Smith (q.v.) then Bale & May (1848-51) with George W. May (q.v.), all of New York City. [Do examine these partnership names under Producers for additional dies which may have been created by Bale.]
Bale was particularly skillful at diesinking–dies with all wording made with letter punches, but was poor with any pictorial devices. Thus for many of his early pieces (prior to 1833) the devices was the work of his partner, Charles Cushing Wright. This may also have been the case with his later partners.
Groce and Wallace notes James Bale's name does not appear in New York City directories after 1851. His dates of birth and death still remain unknown.
Those pieces which James Bale did sign appear as BALE, or BALE NY. There exists some dies signed W&B during Bale's partnership with Wright, B&S NY during Bale's partnership with Smith, but apparently none with B&M for the brief stint with George May.
Numismatic dealer Charles McSorley made a study of campaign medals and the works of Early American engravers and attributed many unsigned pieces to Bale (nine listed below). Numismatist Wesley S. Cox Sr researched early tokens and attributed pieces to Bale by the study of letter punches he was known to have used, reported in S60 {2001} Rulau. Numismatic author and dealer Q. David Bowers attributes two early storecards (circa 1837) – which are all typographic – to Bale (see Feuchtwanger below, and N28 {2002} Bowers, p 112).
