BIGGS, Electra Waggoner (1912-2001) sculptor, Vernon, Texas.
Married name: Mrs. John Biggs.
Born Fort Worth, Texas, 8 November 1912.
Surely one of the most colorful of all the artists listed in this
directory. Her male ancestors included Dan Waggoner, an
early cattle rancher in northern Texas, his son, W.T.
Waggoner, who acquired more land and herds until he
owned more than half a million acres and built a major
business of cattle, farming, horses and oil.
Daughter, Electra Waggoner, inherited much of the W.T.
Waggoner estate and became an accomplished sculptor.
Amon G. Carter commissioned her, in 1935, to prepare
an equestrian statue of his friend Will Rogers astride
his horse, Soapsuds. Also as a sculptor, she prepared the
models for the emblems and medals listed below, all
produced for her by Medallic Art Company.
Electra Texas (Wichita county) named after her mother.
Daughter has a building named for her at Vernon College,
but most interesting, the Buick Electra was named after her
(through her husband's brother-in-law, a president of Buick
Motors). She was also the subject of a book: Electra II:
Electra Waggoner Biggs, Socialite, Sculptor, Ranch Heiress
(by Roze McCoy Porter, published 1995).
Medallic Art made 65 portrait galvanos of immediate family,
friends and relatives of this artist.
Signed models EW monogram.
Died Vernon, Texas, 23 April 2001.
