CARR, Daniel James ( 1958- ) designer, engraver, medal manufacturer.
Born 19 September 1958, Denver, Colorado.
Educated Univ of Colorado mechanical engineering BS, 1982.
Self-taught as artist in coin and medal design, engraving.
Drafted proposed Astronaut dollar design 1986.
In 1998 created his own software to digitally prepare
sculptural relief designs ultimately for coins and medals.
This was modified 2004 for a computer to control an
engraving machine (CNC) preparing metal patterns
and cutting steel dies directly. Acquired a surplus Grabener
coining press from U.S. Mint, Denver, 2007; restored
and in operation following year.
Established Moonlight Mint 2008 for striking coins,
medals and tokens of his own design and engraving in
a wide number of categories: bullion coins, alternate
currency coins, fantasy coins, ingots, so-called dollars,
coin and token replicas, other items of a private mint.
Most all his creations are issued in multiple varieties,
30 is maximum number of varieties for any one type.
Submitted design for new U.S. dollar coin Nov-Dec
1998, proposing Bessie Coleman, which tied for second
place, ultimately won by Glenda Goodacre’s Sacagawea.
One of 15 artists invited by the U.S. Mint to submit
designs for all five 2001 statehood quarter dollars; two
accepted, New York, Rhode Island, in 2003 his design
for Maine was a finalist, all struck as circulating coins.
His reverse of the Rhode Island Quarter won a COTY,
Coin Of The Year award (from Krause Publications)
for Best circulating coin 2001. Won the George A. Mallis
Literary Award 2013, for article on 1964-D Peace Dollar.
Acquired rights to historic Clark Gruber name in 2012.
Some of Carr’s medallic creations are listed in Unusual
