CODMAN, Edwin Everett (1876-1955) sculptor, Providence, RI.
Born London, 19 December 1876. Youngest of a family of
four silver designers, father and three sons, all came to America
and all but middle son worked for Gorham in Providence.
On trip to England 1886 Gorham Presidemt Edward Holman
met father William Christian Codman, and oldest son William,
who he offered a job at Gorham. Son William came to U.S.,
first employed 30 July 1888. Three years later father, wife
and two sons, including Edwin, immigrated Septemberr 1891.
Gorham hires father as silver designer 16 November 1891;
Edwin hired 27 June 1892 as sculptor modeler.
Father W.C.C.’s work won a gold medal at Paris 1900 Expo,
he rose to be art director at Gorham before he retired in 1914.
Son William became art director on father’s retirement. In 1930
his book, An Illustrated History of Silver Design is published.
Edwin traveled to France 1898. Worked on and off for Gorham
until 1914. Established Codman & Codman studio with middle
brother Frank for brief time. Traveled to Europe with father
1906. Returns to Gorham but leaves shortly after father retires
as art director 1914, perhaps not wanting to work under his
brother’s direction. However, he created a great many reliefs
and sculptures which Gorham produced during this period
(see below).
Listed in city Provident directories 1908-18. He and wife had
summer house in Dorset, Vermont 1936-39 to which he retired.
Member: Providence Art Club, 1899-1927, exhibits until 1925.
Died a suicide, Dorset, Vermont, 29 April 1955.
