CROKER, John (1670-1741) German-British diesinker, medalist;
Chief Engraver, Royal Mint London.
German name: Johann Crocker.
Born Dresden, Germany, 21 October 1670.
Apprenticed as a jeweler. Came to England 1691 and learned
diesinking in London. Became assistant engraver Royal Mint
1697, appointed chief engraver 1705; remained so until his
death. He created the dies, as Betts says, "for a large number
of medals." An article in Numismatic Chronicle (1853), quoted
by Forrer, states his coin design and engraving was surpassed
only by Thomas Simon, Pistrucci and William Wyon.
Died London, England, 21 March 1741.
