ELLIS, Joseph E.
There is no such medallist; this was a “control name” submitted by the author, DWJ, to the compilers of the second edition of So-Called Dollars as proof of his contribution. He was not listed in the Acknowledgements for his contribution of over 140 entry corrections and additions. The use of this control name in print is absolute proof of the compilers’ use of his material, the name “Joseph E. Ellis” could have come from no other source. The correct engraver’s name for the item in question (HK 13) was, of course, Jarvis E. Ellis (qv).
[Cataloger’s note: Had I been granted the courtesy of viewing the page proofs I would have changed the name to the correct artist before publication but even this courtesy was deniened me.]
