FRENCH, Daniel Chester (1850-1931) sculptor, medalist.
Born Exeter, New Hampshire, 20 April 1850.
His most famous work, of course, is Seated Lincoln statue,
Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC. His busts of John Adams,
Woodrow Wilson and Lewis Cass in United States Capitol.
His sculptural designs (of Lincoln, Minuteman, others)
replicated more than any other American medalist.
Famed, somewhat, ironically as the creater of the “French Head,”
a classical female head DCF placed on the obverse of the Catskill
Aquaduct Medal, 1917. Clyde Trees, president of Medallic Art
Company, chose this obverse of this medal to be symbolic of,
not only the field of medals in its entirety, but also the essence
of the work of the company. In 1932 the firm adopted this relief
as their trademark, in use ever since. The term “French Head”
is a play on DCF’s last name, also as medallic art is somewhat of
a French art and the two MAco founders, Henri and Felix Weil,
were French. Among the praise of this medal the Catskill
Aquaduct Medal is the only medal in which the Metropolitan
Museum of Art has three specimens in their collections.
French’s home, Chesterwood in Stockbridge Massachusetts, was
donated by his daughter, Margaret French Cressen, to the National
rust for Historical Preseration as a Historic Site and remainsas
a museum with his studio intact with many of his sculptural works,
including the original model of his French Head plaster, on view.
Signed models DCF initials.
Member United States Commission of Fine Arts 1910-1915.
Recipient of American Academy of Arts and Letters Gold Medal
for Sculpture, 1917.
Honorary Fellow: National Sculpture Society.
Died Stockbridge, Massachusetts, 7 October 1931.
