GREENOUGH, Horatio (1805-1852) sculptor.
Born Boston, Massachusetts 6 September 1805.
Greenough's statue of Washington in U.S. Capitol and
his bust of John Quincy Adams is in the New-York
Historical Socieety.
U.S. Mint Director Robert Maskell Patterson had asked
famed sculptor Greenough to improve the beauty of U.S.
coins, yet none of Greenough's suggestions were implemented.
One of longest entries in Falk's Who Was Who in American Art
honors Greenough's other artistic accomplishments, however.
Greenough was painted in oil by John Gadsby Chapman
(q.v.) illustrated in Chamberlain, fig 46.
Died Somerville, Massachusetts 18 December 1852.
