GROUX, Professor Dan. E. Alias of Jacques Groux (fl 1856).
An accomplished con man, he was an associate of
Thomas Wyatt (q.v.), counterfeiter, who produced
"Wyatt copies" of early American Colonial Coins
(e.g. New England, Pine Tree, Good Samaritan
shillings and such). Groux had Wyatt also made
false copies of U.S. medals.
Groux is most noted, however, as the designer of a medal
that was never struck. He published a pamphlet where his
outrageous plan to issue a Benjamin Franklin Medal was
described, to be the beginning of an astounding 1000-medal
series (none of which were ever produced). At least three
numismatists have been taken in by this proposal and included
this nonexistant medal in their works.
