HANCOCK, Walker Kirtland (1901-1998) sculptor, medalist.
Born Saint Louis, Missouri, 28 June 1901.
Produced American medals in seven decades, a record.
He was sculptor-in-residence at American Academy in
Rome (1956-57, 1962-63), Stone Mountain Georgia (1965),
and was longtime instructor in sculpture at Pennsylvania
Academy of Fine Arts (1929-1967).
First visited Gloucester in 1921, acquired a tract of an
abandoned rock query land, built a studio there and
later moved there permanently.
Created hundreds of realistic sculptural works. Most noted:
bust of first President Bush in U.S. Capitol, monumental
statue of James Madison in Library of Congress Madison
Building, and his largest, a 39 foot bronze angel in 30th
Street Station, Philadelphia.
Signed models WH monogram or initials.
Fellow: National Sculpture Society.
Academician: National Academy of Arts and Letters.
Awarded: J. Sanford Saltus Medal for Medallic Art by
American Numismatic Society, 1953.
