HORST, Gustav (fl 1876) diesinker.
A proprietor, along with Frederick B. Smith (after
Smith broke up with Herman Hartmann, 1859) in the
diesinking firm of Smith and Horst. This name does
appear on at least one medal (listed below). After Smith
dies Horst joins with Frederick Koch (q.v.) to form
Horst & Koch. In 1893, the firms of Horst & Koch, Smith
& Seward and H.R. Wartenberg all merge to form New
York Engraving and Die Sinking Company, which
specialized in stamping medals and badges for the trade.
