HOUDON, Jean Antoine (1741-1828) French sculptor, wax modeler.
Worked in America 1785.
Born Versailles, France, 20 March 1741.
Died Paris, France, 15 July 1828.
He visited America with Benjamin Franklin and resided
in Philadelphia with George Washington while modeling
him and Franklin. His Washington bust is in the U.S.
Capitol, the Franklin at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
These two Houdon portraits have been widely replicated
in medallic art. But Houdon also did portrait busts of other
Americans: John Paul Jones, Thomas Jefferson and
Robert Fulton; also Lafayette of American interest.
Among the few bas-reliefs he did was the conjoined
portraits of the Montgolfer brothers (1783). It was also
replicated in medallic form.
