HULSEMAN, Edward (fl 1833-1847) Early American engraver,
diesinker, Attleboro, Massachusetts, and New York City.
Numismatist Robert Lindesmith studied the work of this
engraver and called him "the leading token diesinker
of the 1833 to 1844 Hard Times period." He resided in
Attleboro during this period where he engraved a most
noted work, his 1837 Half Cent Worth of Pure Copper
Token. A decade later he created his most infamous piece,
the 1847 Hawaiian Keneta (One Cent) Coin; infamous
because he erred in the denomination name on the reverse,
intended to be one of a hundred (Hawaiian Hapa Haneri)
he engraved Hapa Hanern.
He relocated to New York City in 1937. Most of his early
work before this date was struck in Attleboro, some of his
later work was struck by Scovill of Waterbury.
Wesley Cox verifited many pieces below from a study of
Hulseman's letter punches, reported by Rulau S60 {2001}.
Signed dies H initial.
