LANPHEAR, William K. (c1827-1887) diesinker, stencil cutter,
Cincinnati, Baltimore, Minneapolis.
Name variations: W. A. Lamphear, Lampher.
Born New York State, ca 1827. Raised in Lancaster
Pennsylavania, where he was a fan maker, married his
wife in 1859, then moved to Cincinnati in 1860..
In business in Cincinnati before 1861 where he operated
W.K. Lanphear & Co as a stencil cutter; Later employed
engravers William Senour and Frederick W. Lutz (qq.v.)
which did general engraqving and who manufactured
Suttler tokens, patriotic tokens, and a major maker of
Civil War tokens. Listed in1863 and 1864 Cincinnati
city directories as general engraver and related products.
Directories 1965 and 1866 list all three men as principles,
Lanphear. Senour and Lutz. Lanphear also operated a
nearby cigar store.
In patnership as Lanphear & Ross with Richard Ross,
1871-1873 in Baltimore. He was sole proprietor there
of Excelsior Stencil, Stamp & Novelty Company 1874-
1880 (see Producers file). He specialized in storecards
and Masonic medals at this time. He is plaqued with
misspellings, even appearing on his own storecards!
In one Cincinnati city directory ad (1860) he adveritsed
"old coins bought and sold" which led Q. David Bowers
to delcare Lanphear an early American coin dealer. Pete
Smith discovered he moved from Baltimore to Minnesota
after 1880.
Died Minneapolis, Minnesota, 25 December 1887.
