LONGACRE, James Barton (1794-1869) diesinker, engraver,
Chief Engraver, Philadelphia Mint, 1844-1869.
Born Delaware County, Pennsylvania, 11 August 1794.
Became steel-plate engraver before becoming die engraver,
he was trained by George Murray of Philadelphia, as such
Longacre engraved Washington, Jefferson, Hancock, and
other portraits for Biography Signers of Declaration of
Independence; major work was engraving plate portraits
for 4-volume National Portrait Gallery, 1834-39.
Appointed Chief Engraver, U.S. Mint, 6 September 1844,
served until his death. Was thwarted throughtout mint
career, according to Breen, because he was not a member
of the four-family ruling clique at the mint.
Died Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 14 January 1869.
