LUTZ, William Frederick (1836-1904) engraver, Cincinnati, Baltimore.
Born Gardelegen, Prussia, 18 January 1836. Came to America 1859.
Employed 1860 by W.P/ Lanphear & Co, Cincinnati (q.v.),
as an engraver where he used the name Frederick W. Lutz.
Gladfelter states Lutz engraved dies that may be ascribed to
Lanphear, particularly Civil War tokens as he only signed a
few dies with last name and one storecard F.W. LUTZ ARTIST
Followng the Civil War Lutz related to Baltimore where he
was emlyed by F.W. Dorman & Co (q.v.) die sinkers and stencil
cutters (probably 1870-1872). In 1873 he was in partnership with
Otto Heidermann (q.v.). He moved to Washington. DC in 1874.
Died Washington DC, 30 October 1904.
