MacNEIL, Hermon Atkins (1866-1947) sculptor, medalist.
Born Chelsea, Massachusetts, 27 February 1866.
His Liberty Standing Quarter design won out over 50 other
artists but was altered because of an exposed breast which
was covered up after first year of issue.
He taught at Cornell University, Art Institute of Chicago,
Pratt Institute and American Academy of Rome. Specialized
in figures, statues and monuments and established the
American Indian as a legitimate sculptural art form.
Signed coin model M initial, others HM monogram or initials.
Member (President, Honorary Fellow): National Sculpture Society.
Awarded: J. Sanford Saltus Medal for Medallic Art by
American Numismatic Society, 1923.
Died College Point, LI, New York, 2 October 1947.
