NIVOLA, Constantino (1911-1988) Italian-American sculptor.
Born Orani, Sardinia, Italy, 5 July 1911.
Came to America 1939. His unusual modeling technique
for architectural reliefs was to carve a design in beach sand
and pour a cement cast of this, obviously obtaining a rough
cast. His one medallic item, a premiere medallic object,
was a more traditional cast.
At the suggestion of Art in America magazine Nivola
was invited to take part in the creation of a bas-relief as a
Christmas gift in 1965 and invented–along with six other
modern American artsts–a new genre, medallic objects!
Died East Hamton, New York, 5 May 1988.
