PIETZ, Adam (1873-1961) German-American medalist, assistant
engraver U.S. Mint (1927-46).
Born Offenbach, Germany, 19 July 1873. Began engraving
in Germany 1887. Came to America and Philadelphia 1889.
Established his own engraving business Philadelphia 1897
finding work wherever he could. He engraved monograms
on family silverware, heraldic objects. In 1910 he copywrited
six Christmas card designs he engraved.
Joined the U.S. Mint October 1927 as assistant engraver.
He specialized in–or was assigned–creating designs and
engraving dies for foreign coinages struck by U.S. Mints,
reverses of yearly Assay medals and medals of Treasury
officials. In 1928 he designed and engraved die for first
5-cent airmail for stamped envelopes (Scott UC1, issued
12 January 1929). He retired from Mint April 1946 (and
received specially struck Retirement Medal, see below).
Three Philadelphia Mint artists–Pietz, Frank Gasparro, Gilroy
Roberts–(and sculptor Michael Lantz) were the first American
medalists to have exhibited in a F.I.D.E.M. exhibition (1951).
Pietz exhibited frames of medals on four occasions at the
National Academy of Design (1911, and winter shows in
1911, 1922, and 1929).
Lifelong member Philadelphia Sketch Club (1900-1961) for
which Pietz engraved three struck medals and cast numerous
award medals for monthly painting contests and Annual
Outing competitions (eg: 1918 below). The bald Pietz was
a member of the Club’s subculture group, “the Hairy Apes,”
whose requirements were “no hair, high order of intelligence,
a calm well-balanced impartial judgment!” The latter, perhaps,
was in contrast to his irascibility evident in his younger years.
Signed models AP monogram (2 different) or AP initials
[Adam Pietz only in 20th century, earlier mint engraver,
Anthony Paquet used AP infrequently in 19th century.]
Died Philadelphia, 6 December 1961.
